I Tested 7 “Clean” Protein Bars. Only One Passed My 6-Point Check.
Every bar on this list is better than what's at the gas station. Only one passed all six criteria.

All the bars I tested
Seven of the cleanest bars on the market. One that passed all six criteria.
This isn't a clean-bar-vs-junk-bar review. Every brand on this list markets itself as clean, and most of them earn some of that claim on the label. I wanted to know which one actually held up to a strict, line-by-line read.
So I ran seven of the best-selling clean bars in the category — RXBAR, IQBAR, Truvani, GoMacro, TruBar, and Thunderbird — against The Forward Bar on the same six-point check. Every competitor failed at least one criterion. Only The Forward Bar passed all six.
- ✓Short ingredient list
- ✓Complete protein from whole foods (not powders or isolates)
- ✓No powders or isolates
- ✓Refined sugar free, 0g of sugar alcohols
- ✓No synthetic "natural flavors"
- ✓100% certified organic ingredients

The Rankings

- ✓Short ingredient list you can read
- ✓12g complete protein from pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds — from whole foods, not protein powder
- ✓No protein powders or isolates
- ✓Sweetened with raw unfiltered honey (2g added sugar, unrefined)
- ✓100% certified organic ingredients
- ✓Passes all 6 criteria
The only bar in the test that passed all six criteria without a caveat. The 12g of complete protein comes from pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds — whole foods, not protein powder. Sweetener is raw unfiltered honey, and every ingredient is certified organic.
Complete protein built from whole seeds instead of isolates. Raw unfiltered honey as the only sweetener, 2g of added sugar. 100% certified organic top to bottom.
Nine bars per box instead of the usual twelve, and the whole-food formulation carries a higher per-bar cost than powder-based bars.

- ✓Short ingredient list
- ✓Refined sugar free
- ✓12g protein
- ✕Protein comes from processed egg white powder rather than whole foods
- ✕Flavored with synthetic "natural flavors"
- ✕Not organic
The benchmark for the whole clean-label category — and it earns that reputation on the front of the deck. The ingredient list is short, it's refined sugar free, and it hits 12g of protein. The differences with Forward are narrow and specific: the protein source, the flavor system, and the organic status.
The bar that made 'no B.S.' a category. Short, honest label and a serious protein number at a mainstream price.
The 12g of protein comes from processed egg white powder rather than whole foods, the flavor system relies on synthetic "natural flavors," and the bar isn't organic.

- ✓Sweetened with stevia
- ✕Protein is pea protein isolate (processed)
- ✕Flavored with synthetic "natural flavors"
A plant-based bar sweetened with stevia. The two ingredient-deck compromises are the protein — pea protein isolate, a processed source — and the flavor system, which uses synthetic "natural flavors."
Sweetened with stevia, no added sugar to the label.
Protein is isolated pea powder, and the flavor system uses synthetic "natural flavors."

- ✓Short ingredient list
- ✓Organic
- ✓Sweetened with maple syrup and coconut sugar
- ✕5–8g of protein per bar depending on flavor
'Only what you need' is the brand promise, and the label backs it up. Sweeteners are maple syrup and coconut sugar. Protein lands between 5 and 8 grams per bar depending on the flavor — the honest number, stated on the panel.
A genuinely short, organic label from a brand built around clean sourcing.
Protein tops out at 8g per bar, so it lands more as a snack option than a full protein bar.

- ✓10–12g protein per bar
- ✓USDA organic
- ✕First ingredient is organic brown rice syrup
- ✕Protein is a brown rice + pea blend
A grocery-shelf mainstay: organic, plant-based, wide flavor lineup. Two facts sit at the top of the label — organic brown rice syrup is the first ingredient, and the protein number comes from a brown rice and pea blend.
USDA organic and reliably 10–12g of protein.
The first ingredient is a syrup, and the protein number is built on a rice + pea powder blend.

- ✓12g plant protein
- ✓No sugar alcohols
- ✕Protein is a rice + pea blend
- ✕Sweetened with cane sugar
- ✕Contains RSPO palm oil
TruBar hits 12g of plant protein and deserves credit for staying away from sugar alcohols. The rest of the deck reads a little longer: rice + pea protein blend, cane sugar as the sweetener, and RSPO palm oil in the coating.
12g of plant protein and no sugar alcohols in the formulation.
The protein is a rice + pea blend, sweetened with cane sugar, and the coating contains RSPO palm oil.

- ✓Very clean label
- ✓Positioned as a snack bar, not a protein bar
- ✕3–6g of protein per bar
One of the cleanest labels in the entire category — a short list of real food and nothing else. The reason it ranks here and not higher is category: at 3–6g of protein it's positioned as a snack bar, not a protein bar.
A very clean label from a brand that keeps the ingredient deck disciplined.
Protein tops out around 6g, so it doesn't sit in the protein-bar bracket.
Side-by-side: all 7 bars, all 6 criteria
One row per criterion. Green means pass, red means fail. Every competitor on this list fails at least one. Only Forward is green across the board.

Why even the clean bars cut corners
The bars on this list are the good end of the category. So why does every one of them still miss at least one criterion? Two reasons, and they're both about how the protein number gets built.
Reason one: isolated protein powders are the easy way to hit 12g. IQBAR, GoMacro, and TruBar all reach their protein number with a pea or rice + pea isolate blend. RXBAR reaches its number with processed egg white powder. The label gets longer or the protein source gets more processed — but the bar hits the spec.
Reason two: skip the powder and the protein number falls. Thunderbird proves this cleanly. Real ingredients only, no powders — and the bars land at 3–6g of protein depending on the flavor. It's a beautiful snack bar. It just isn't a protein bar.
The only way through both problems is to build the protein number out of whole seeds that already carry it — pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds — instead of isolating the protein out of them. That is more expensive per gram of protein than any powder blend. It is why Forward is $4.44 as a single and $3.78 on subscription, and it is the honest reason for the price.
Reagan’s verdict
I tested RXBAR, IQBAR, Truvani, GoMacro, TruBar, and Thunderbird against the same 6-point check I use with my own clients. Only The Forward Bar passed all six.
A few of these are bars I’d still recommend. RXBAR and Thunderbird both deserve credit on the ingredient side. But every competitor failed at least one criterion, and Forward is the only bar on the list where I don’t have to caveat anything.
Twelve grams of complete protein from pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds. Raw unfiltered honey as the only sweetener. 100% certified organic ingredients. No powders, no isolates. It is the bar I now keep in my bag.
Reader questions
Aren't RXBAR and Thunderbird also 'real food' bars?+
Yes on ingredients, and that's exactly why they ranked high here. The gaps are elsewhere: RXBAR's 12g of protein comes from processed egg white powder and it isn't organic, and Thunderbird's protein number runs 3–6g depending on flavor — a snack bar rather than a protein bar. Both are honest labels; neither passes all six criteria.
Can pumpkin and hemp seeds really deliver complete protein?+
Yes. Both pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds contain all nine essential amino acids, so 12g of protein sourced from that combination is a complete-protein number without any isolated protein powder.
How does the $3.78 subscription work?+
You choose your delivery cadence, the price locks at $3.78 per bar (versus $4.44 for a one-time order), and you can pause or cancel any time from the account dashboard.
What flavor was tested?+
Mint Chip. Nine bars per box.
What is the return policy?+
If you open the box, try a bar, and don't like it, The Forward Bar offers a full refund on your first order.
